You can spread out a lot of volatile oil in a hurry below in a small boat, and it will off gas strongly. Watco applied like you say, can become a museum like finish, perfect for shaped hardwoods that are finished to a glass like surface.
You just keep sanding with finer and finer grits, apply all you want, it's hard to stop, and there's no reason to, the finish gets finer(and you can quit after a couple coats too with great(but lesser) results).
It is an oil that fills the pores at best. Not as much of a protective coating against moisture and handling wear.
