Frozen pipes.

Went to the blueprint place in New London Monday morning (I think might still do blueprints??) to buy a couple of mechanical pencils. (I use the Alvin Draft-Tec Retract, 0.7mm with HB leads - had two, broke one, lost the other - I blame the cats). Door is open but the place is dark - a couple of people walking around with flashlights wading through the water. Broken sprinkler pipe. I commiserate with Pat (the owner), find my two pencils, give someone the cash, and off I go to the boat. This could be real tough for her, as she had a lot of expensive machines for doing vinyl sign cutting and printing - I hope none of them were under the flood.
Our church has had frozen pipes in the overhead in the past - the heater tapes never seemed to keep them all thawed out. Did a $1.5M expansion/renovation a few years back, part of which moved the insulation from the joists to the rafters, so the attic space is now heated. No freeze problems since.
Went to the boat to check things, and found a lot of frozen stuff in the FW system (never properly winterized - damage unknown) and the cockpit bilge pump. Used a hand pump and bucket to empty the bilge. I'm trying to keep the bilge dry to cut down on condensation on the headliner, but so far it's a losing battle. I'm very reluctant to put heat into the boat. We should be getting a few days of warmer weather in the near future, so I can better see where things stand. This is my first winter in the water, so I'm learning.
