Our IP has an enormous icebox with a sliding shelf. Unfortunately the design of the box goes against my theory of icebox design, it drains the melt water into the bilge along with whatever might be in the melt water. I suspect that is one of the reasons the bilge had "stuff" growing just out of eyesight under the sole. That is all gone now, cleaned up and painted over. However, every bag of ice is going to the same place when it melts. Somewhere there is a drain hose according to the schematics in the owner's manual but it is behind bulkheads that were tabbed in during the build so I can't really re-plumb it. I was painting the insides of all the lockers last weekend and realized that the pot and pan storage locker under the stove is a perfect size to slide in a small Norcold. The attached photo is not our boat but a sister ship of the same year. So, what I'm thinking is that by removing that teak door and the shelf inside I could add a fridge to the galley and use the icebox for storage instead? The option of converting the icebox to a refrigerator is also possible but pricey and way more work. Besides, the icebox would give us more storage and the fridge should hold everything we need for our sailing?
Is this a dumb idea to do to a really nice boat?
