A friend had massive damages to boat equipment. lightning is a suspect however could also be the shore connection with a shorted 220VAC to the 12 VDC line.

My Q is if anyone had lightning damage to electronic instruments what was the visible sign when the boards were inspected? Was it all chard black and damaged or was it all looking as normal but no function at all.

I am trying to assess if there is a way to see a damaged electronic device after a lightning strike from an electrical failure that is not lightning related.
