We used one when motorsailing because of the confusion it might cause.

Motorsailing is a sailboat under power. When we were in an area of traffic where there might be some confusion on our state of power we used it hoisted on the spinnaker halyard tacked to the stainless bow rail. That put it ahead of the headsail and foil.

Didn't use it very much. San Diego Bay, Long Island Sound, ICW, but never in open water. It was mostly for commercial vessels as almost no private boat drivers have any idea what the thing is.

We used it because the Admiral had the captains license and wanted to be correct. We were hailed on Long Island Sound thanking us for its use. Seems kind of dumb to put it on a moving sailboat with no sails up
