Just thought of something on warranty

I just remembered a warranty story. I definitely get the impression that Yanmar are sticklers for the letter of the law on warranty claims. Guy in the next slip to me has a trawler with twin Yanmars, big ones, 440 hp I think. He bought the trawler new with brand new engines. Couple years after he bought the boat he was cruising along when one of the Yanmars ingested pieces of a broken injector. Long story short, engine destroyed and Yanmar wouldn't lift a finger to replace/repair the engine as it was a year or so outside the warranty. Even though the injector was clearly defective and failed catastrophically. They told him words to the effect that you are supposed to run the engines hard and accumulate hours during the warranty period to disclose any defective components. Well, guess what, maybe it works that way in an industrial setting but yacht engines, power or sail, just don't get used that way. Now maybe all manufacturers are like this on warranty claims, but I personally thought this was pretty lousy customer service. Just thought I should mention this.
