I think use of smart phones and tablets in lieu of laptops, along with LED lighting have made a huge difference to help alleviate power budget issues.
I think wind and solar complement each other. Usually when there's no sun, there's wind. But I've read from full-time cruisers who have both that if they could only have one they'd pick solar. Maybe that's different in Maine and points north, where the sun angle is lower. We do pretty well on just solar at 40-degrees north, but when the whole family's aboard and laptops are running, and the fridge is being opened a lot -- there are times when we need to either augment with boat engine or the Yamaha EF2000is inverter generator. Last year we didn't use the Yamaha at all, but we happened to have a lot of sun. I know how you feel about those inverter gens but we do try to be considerate and use it only at times/places we're not as likely to disturb others. At about 55db it's about as quiet as the average room air conditioner, and it's really about the same loudness as the boat engine. It's also way more fuel efficient than running a 59hp diesel just to turn an alternator, so it's "greener" in a relative sense.
