but I feel the opposite way: If we're at anchor 5 days in Block Island and we have a few consecutive overcast days, I need to run some kind of engine to keep the house bank above 50%. So it's crazy to run a 59HP diesel to turn a 60 amp alternator that puts out maybe half that (at most, in the real world) and less as the charge acceptance rate tapers down. My Yamaha can run the shore charger at 30-40 AMPS bulk charge and still be in "eco mode" purring along at less than half RPM. It's way more fuel efficient, and while the noise level is comparable I find the Yamaha easier to ignore. I guess it's a personal thing.
