Our home port is the Columbia River and we have made the trip up and down the "Straits of Juan de Puke-ah" a few times. It is my least favorite body of water by far. We have only had similar conditions to what you describe once on an outbound trip but the only fog we had was off Dungeness Spit in the morning before the wind came up. Of the inbound trip I only recall once having good sailing, usually it has been calm. Outbound has always been a bitch. The last 6 hours into Neah Bay were really rough but we did have current with us but the wind on the nose.
Have you been to the Makah museum in Neah Bay? We only went in once about an hour before closing and want to go back for some more time. It is filled with artifacts recovered from a dig at the Ozette Archeological SiteCape Alava. A village was buried there about 500 years ago when the beach cliffs slide on top of it.
