On our dock I know of two that have said they are done. A powerboat owner that has gone a direction away from boating and a sailboat owner who has not had his mast up in five years due to poor health of his spouse. BTW, I approached him four years ago about buying his boat, he said no. Now he is ready but it has been neglected for all those years so is a 34' project I don't want. There are boats all over the club that are up for sale, many, many more at the marinas and clubs on the bay front.
Truthfully Tom, one of the big draws for us here at our club is the social aspect of being a member. There are times when we go down for events, parties, BBQ's or just to hang out. It is said that we are actually "A Drinking Club with a Boating Problem" but we try to keep that low key We have at least one event every month year round, in the winter things move inside to the clubhouse. It really provides a huge support group for boat projects or boat problems as well.
In my head we are just wrapping up year one of a four year plan. In three years I see us being done, selling whatever we have in our slip at that time and concentrating on our cabin in the mountains. Unlike you, our kids are not boaters. Yes, they grew up with boats, on boats, sailing and power, however they have moved away and don't seem anxious to get involved. My son in Pittsburgh admits that he really has no idea what we even have now and has not been on one of our boats since we had the powerboat six years ago. On the other hand, our cabin is used and enjoyed by everyone, not quite year round but pretty close.
