My memory is a little faded. In the picture, the flap is turned up to see. It is actually just a continuation of the dodger material, with a sailcloth loop sewn to the back to form a pocket. The carbon rod is inside the sailcloth pocket. Bungie is captured by the loops of light webbing. Note a couple placed closely on each side of where hook is intended to be. Bungie is actually stretched to loops sewn to the ends of the sailcloth pocket and tied off, so its stretch it being directly taken in compression by the carbon rod. On the particular run pictured, the coaming that it goes against is curved, so a fairly light carbon rod was used so that it would follow the curve pressing against the coaming. You can see at the ends it pulls away a little (less so if everything is zipped up tight). When first done I intended to taper the ends of the rod to soften the curve at the end but laziness got the better of me I guess. Anyway it still works great.
