Jon,
I know that boat well. It was owned by a customer of mine, a school teacher, and real nice guy. He basically cruised here up and down the Maine coast in settled weather, then bought a fin keel for better sailing in the light summer winds we have...
I did a lot of electrical work on her back in perhaps 2010/2011 but she was far from what I would consider off-shore ready... She was a kit-boat and had a really, really, really scary electrical system when I started. Think spaghetti.... I managed to get most of the wiring to a safer level, perhaps a 70% electrical refit, but it was pretty budget constrained. The owner did a lot of the wire pulling and learned a lot in the process about his boat and the electrical systems.. He was a great guy and a pleasure to work with. There were still some mechanical and other issues that would have precluded me from considering taking taking that boat off-shore, but that's just me.
When Bob sold her I got a call from Stephen to see if I could fix some items before he headed south. His radar was dead and there were a few other issues which I can't recall all of. He literally flew into town and was leaving that day or the next. It was a real rush job and I remember being down there on a Saturday morning trying to trouble shoot a few bugs.. There was no time to really shake her out properly especially for the voyage he had planned.
I don't know what Steve did to her after that, he cut me a check and I never saw the boat again and never did hear from him. I gave him the name of a couple guys I know down South and assumed he luckily made it where he was going..
IMHO he seemed over confident in the boat without physically knowing much about it. I remember we discussed good places to duck in along the trip South and he seemed pretty confident in himself and abilities. He also seemed in a hurry to get going especially with a few important items, for a single hander that were non-operational, such as the radar.
Sad to here she was lost. If someone had pushed on and continued the work she needed she would have been a decent little boat. I did not get the sense from Steven that he was interested in spending much money on her for improvements but it was one meeting and I may have taken it for what it was at the time, a rush to get out of dodge......
