I simply don't understand why any responsible authority would leave them unlighted. I wasn't the skipper of the boat but we were trying to balance the danger they posed against the detrimental effects of the Stream by staying just outside. I wasn't aware of their existence until I came up on watch. Night, rain, balky radar, inside plastic dodger etc. They did appear on the chart plotter, but I would never simply rely on that tool... Entering Atlantic City at night was a trip... none of the bouys were where they were on the plotter. Possibly a non-updated set of charts there too from Sandy. I'm old fashioned, I suppose. I think I would have planned to take the speed penalty or just planned to heave to for the night. Learned a lot on that trip... lots of things just waiting to whack you out there!
