Here's a spring project I'm considering.

Retire this analog Speedo. It hasn't worked, well, in a couple seasons, and gave up all together last fall. You can see, it's not in a great spot. The centerboard handle can be dropped to crack the glass. I replaced it once with a scrap of Lexan, and I doubt that's the first time in 50 years, it has been broken.

The reason for a speedo these days is speed through the water. If it's really accurate, and the wheel is clean, speed through the water may be useful. But I find I can gauge current pretty accurately by other visual indicators. And the accuracy of GPS is all I need for subtle change in sail trim speed.

The system is; a hole in the hull, the wheel is a maintenance item(a few times a season), it's a couple of wiring circuits-one from the wheel to the dial, one line and fuse/breaker(I like to conserve power).

I could spend some money with a digital read out, re-wire, continue to maintain it, because, there may be a reason, I'm missing? I don't need any space for more instruments.

Or....pull it all out and do something more useful, with this hole. I can't think of a wood fix as this is nearly one slab of wood(joined once a few inches above the bridgedeck).

I'm thinking a small round, fixed port would be simplest(a little useless). Either find one or cut wood trim ring. Some other use? A cubby for beer?

Anyone have an idea?
