Is that it can be interfaced to the wind instrument for true wind reading. For some reason that escapes me, Raymarine instruments won't use GPS for this calculation.

I agree with what you wrote about judging current, but I find that having true wind displayed is helpful safety info when running downwind. Other than that I prefer to use apparent wind readings as a guide for trimming sails.
