The apparent wind is the interface metric -- not the true wind, speed through or over ground?

The Raymarine just trys to keep the apparent wind match the "autopilot" apparent wind setting. Some more sophisticated autopilots have software that will adapt the helm settings during tacks/gybes, adjust for seastate and wind shifts, etc. In those cases there would be other sensors that would come into play.

GPS sensors really wouldn't be a likely candidate -- execpt in some indirect deriviative sense (back solving, for example).
