Put the chart plotter in the navigation station and not in the cockpit. It forces you to look at what's around you instead of at a little screen.

I purposely put ours in the navigation station for that reason. I've always thought that not having a chart plotter at the helm makes you a more prudent sailor. Yes, it's more trouble but I think it's better than constantly staring at the chart plotter instead of what's around you. You just go below, look at the screen, come back to the helm and remember what you saw. When I installed our C-Series I added a feed to the cockpit as well as the nav station so I could put the chart plotter either place but never put it in the cockpit deciding I didn't want one at the helm, it would make me lazy. The swing arm allowed me to view it without going below, just not at the helm.

Problem solved, you have a nice bright chart plotter that's protected from weather and theft in a place you can take notes. Now you only need reading glasses so the screen is in focus (if your over 40).
