It's a hassle not having a chart plotter at the helm (I'm told) but then no one had one 20 years ago. Everyone used paper charts and binoculars. I still like it that way. I only use the chart plotter when I'm really tired or navigating after dark in a new area.
We used an iPad the last time we made a combination ICW/banks passage to Annapolis from Key West. The nice thing about the iPad for navigation was the chart plotter was set up with a goto and we'd switch to Angry Birds so we weren't bored. I guess it would be akin to texting while on a freeway.
