That heatshrink is a stress reliever for the soldered joint... keeping it from being work hardened, and pushing the stress further away from the connection itself.

Look, what it comes down to is a proper airtight crimp (which often is NOT properly done) or a solder joint, with a stress relieving heat shrink cover.

If it is a proper airtight crimped joint, solder will not wick in...
