A local chart is indeed cheaper than a GPS system, but if you travel far, electronic charts are MUCH cheaper than paper. As well as being superior.
A set of charts for Norway on paper costs thousands, whereas we bought both Nobeltec and Navionics for a few hundred dollars
In addition to the more up to date info, we have backup.
Paper charts do not suffer computer failures but they can be lost or blow overboard
