You can see the compression of the line on your picture. (That could be from "backing-off" the halyard tension.)

The little "strap" isn't that expensive.

I'm not sure that a full hoist extension from the head up (or at the bottom of the sail at the tack) would be such a good idea. It will dramatically limit your adjustability of the halyard tension.
