Old antifreeze allows sludge to build up. Use an engine flush (compatible with block and accessories) and flush the engine letting it sit in the block for 24 hours then drain. Fill with new antifreeze 50/50 mix. That will, at least, eliminate the sludge in your trouble shooting. I had that problem before I was informed of the issue and the symptoms sound the same.
