Had the Landmark shingles installed in 2006 by a reputable company. After about 3 years I noticed quite a bit of aggregate collecting in our gutters. Over the past year it got worsewhen I looked closely at the shingles some areas only have about 25% of the aggregate remaining. I contacted the roofer who came out and looked them over and said something to the effect there were other installations they did with shingles of that time with similar problems. What we found out:
1. The roofer does not have any obligation under the warranty. Their job was to come and remove 3 shingles (replace with new) and leave them with us.
2. We sent in a claim to CertainTeed along with some documentation and the failed shingles. A bit of work but not overly onerous.
3. CertainTeed has settled our claim. They supply a materials certificate to give "free" shingles to the roofer of our choice. They also agree to pay us $150 / square (100 sq. ft.) of installed roof against the installation cost. The check for the money part is not issued until the roofer submits proof of having delivered the shingles. This settlement was received about 1 month ago and is good for 2 years. Of course, CertainTeed in their settlement claims that there is not defect in the original shingles but are doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. Yeah, right.
We live in Portland Oregon and since the roof does not look like it will fail to the point of leaking will wait until next summer to do it in dry weather. Of course we are disappointed in the life of the roof but would rank CertainTeed as a B- for how they handled the claim.
