Kinda long story (link)

Plan A. A group in the club purchased one of the professional grade propane heat guns from West Marine for about $800. One of the guys in the group passed away and his wife was liquidating all the boating stuff so I purchased their share in the gun. A good plan in theory, but not so much in practice. As a new guy on the dock, I was not exactly welcomed with open arms. I used the gun once for an hour or so, put it back in the dock box where it was stored, never to be seen again. Although that fried my ass, I wasn't even sure where to find the rest of the group so have since given up on it.

Plan B. 50,000 BTU propane weed burner with a piezo electric igniter. Looked just like what one of the shrink wrap service guys was using doing boats at the club. On sale for $20 at Harbor Freight. I bought one. Every time I pushed the igniter button it would shock the living crap out of me. Being a typical guy, I kept pushing the igniter and swearing at it until my hand hurt from getting shocked so much. Took it back.

Plan C. 50,000 BTU propane weed burner, no igniter. On sale for $15 at Harbor Freight. I bought one. Has a knob to adjust the pilot flame which I light with a butane BBQ lighter and a turbo boost lever you squeeze for all 50,000 of those BTU's. I found that 50,000 BTU's will burn through shrink wrap film faster than you can imagine. With trial and error, lots of shrink wrap tape and watching the professionals do it a little more, I found that it is way easier to use the pilot flame knob, keep a nice blue flame going all the time and not use the turbo boost lever. It worked on the boat for two seasons now and my gazebo at the house. The real down dise to this setup is that it only has a 6' hose so you need to carry the tank around. I have adapted to that. I looked for an extension hose, found many, however this weed burner has only the finest Chinese metric hose fittings which match up with nothing available in Northwest PA.
