When I was a kid in SoCal we knew a guy who went through a hurricane in a Coronado 25.
I doubt seriously the boat or weather is to blame. Waves and wind do not normally create large amounts of debris. There has been some weather out there recently but nothing that would break a fiberglass boat into pieces. It's the hard stuff that breaks up boats.
Sounds like a case of a collision to me. There's a lot of traffic out there. Or perhaps they hit some rocks and broke up that way?
But I think the point is valid that the judgment of the crew has to be called into question to venture out on that coast in that boat this time of year. If they were dumb enough to do that they probably were missing a whole bunch of other knowledge, experience, equipment, etc.
And hey it gives the salty old curmudgeons something to rail about. Best to keep those dangerous waters free of all but them and the half million bumfuzzles or whoever the latest yuppie sensation is.
