In Hull Transducer

I have a Hawke Eye Depth sounder with an In-Hull Transducer. I have been trying to install it in my Compac Horizon Cat. The Horizon's hull is solid fiberglass so it should work well with the In-Hull transducer. I have tried several locations. The Hawke Eye people recommend prior to permenant gluing to apply vaseline and position it in the location. I have not been able to get a reading doing this. I can get a reading when I hang the transducer over the side. Does anyone have any suggestions. I contacted a Compac Dealer and the spot in the hull he reccomended was one I tried with the vasline. I assume there is something I am doing wrong. Any suggestion or opinions wil be welcomed.
