Yes it does connect directly to your laptop using the USB connector. You would use it the same way you currently use your integrated wireless adapter, but it will become your second adapter unless you disable the built-in one.
As for "only" 11 mbps? Are you seriously complaining? IMHO anything above 200 kb on a boat is "high speed".
