That's exactly how I do it except

() my tank plug is in the engine space and is a regular deck fill. I use the same kind of key to open it. And, as I said, my stick is graduated in 5 gallon marks. Dan has it right. The simplicity of the stick method beats the electric sending units all to hell. IMHO.
