It is a PITA. Last year I borrowed a friend's oil extractor pump like the one below. At first it wasn't working very well, I pumped and pumped and got almost nothing. I thought I had warmed the engine up enough but I fired it up again and let it run for about 20 more minutes then tried again. It worked pretty well after that, much easier than the hand pump. The pump draws a vacuum on the resevoir and and it just sucks the oil out. Just make sure the oil is well warmed up.
