No matter what sail I put up the motor goes on at less than 8 knots

The thing about both Steve and my boat is
On a beam reach (say 100 degrees true) - 90 degrees apparent -- 6 knot breeze

The polars say you would do pretty well
Just re-rig: light air performance is all about sail area...

Don't know about the J40, but the J105 I race on...
