Similar question as Craig... but I am only thinking of enough power to charge small devices.
I plugged a Standard Horizon VHF charge brick into a modified sine inverter and the brick failed
For small wall wart devices, a sine wave converter is the way to go...

I"ve had portable computers, Icom chargers, Dewalt drills, TV/VCR's, etc. without any problems on modified sine wave
My advice is to think 12V first...
