Thanks Jon... I did and have... but the market itself doesn't.

It annoys me to no end the number of slightly different proprietary batteries and chargers exist out there.

I used to focus on products that used AA batteries that I have a car type charger for... but so many newer products have gone the route of some unique Li-ion battery in some weird shape. I now have 4 different Cannon cameras, and not a one of them shares batteries or chargers. (the lenses are more interchangeable than the batteries)

Even my handheld VHF is not "12V" ready... go figure. My handheld GPS does still use AA batts, but it is the exception in this great mess.

Frankly I'd like to see some national mandate that requires manufactures to go back to standard sized batteries... even Li-ion AA size or AAA size. Just use a freakin' standard!

We did a month long drive/camping trip last year and found one of those little car inverters, I think it was 80 watt... it worked great. So I was going to wire a socket in the boat for a bit more, but along the same lines.

In searching just now, it seems I would be better off not hard wiring it, but just going with the 12V cigar type plug. (I don't have those on the boat either... another upgrade is needed for those... right now I only have the 2 pin 12V connectors... everywhere)

The boat has 110 VAC outlets in a few strategic locations, but I have yet to plug into a dock. I just got long term approval with the Marina, so that will likely change... but first I am going to take a meter to the entire high voltage system.

I do think 12V is the right way to go... but sometimes it just isn't available. On the plus side, I have one of those older 12V drills... with a dead battery... It just became a boat drill... as soon as I hard wire a cigar plug to it.
