We've done it with some halogen replacements

We have some open bulb reading lights throughout our various cabins (2 or 3 in each cabin for the bunks) and 4 in the main cabin.

It was a straightforward replacment. If you tried it in a closed fixture, you migh have some issues heat build-up and output.

The color temperature of the light (° Kelvin , warmth or coldness of color) is major issue.

The biggest difference for me (after you solve the color issue in our fixtures) is that you need to realize the light is point source and it is NOT diffused light. So you get hard shadows. It's not a more diffuse incandescent or even halogen sourse. While our reflectors on the inside of the fixtures are still there, they really aren't effective.

We did it because we couldn't up the size of the halogens from 10W to 20W bulbs; and the LED replacements were brighter and cooler.
