We left the Chesapeake end of the C&D canal at sunrise, went through and down the Delaware Bay, rounded the point and made the approach to Cape May in late afternoon.
It was just really weird. Not difficult by any means but just weird (perhaps it was just the day). There were orderly lines of swells about 4' coming from the East. We were about 3 miles from land and there were shoals between us and land. The swells were trying to break on the shoals offshore and it was just weird. I wasn't prepared for shallow water so far offshore on that part of the coast.
Not difficult by any means but never having been there before we were a bit unsure of the approach so we stayed well offshore and made a straight entrance from a couple of miles away.
(at least that's what I remember.)
ADDITION: After looking at Google Earth it appears that the shoal is only 3/4 mile offshore,,, hmmm? Memory must be going.
We really liked Cape May and even thought of exploring real estate as it was so nice. Unfortunately we had other plans and after 3 days made it north to Atlantic City.
