Neil -- the right stuff that stays flexible to keep water out without being brittle really wouldn't transfer stresses.

I do agree that the key is to keep the plate from moving around the fiberglass. Because the backstay gets a bunch of variable shock loads from wind, seaway, and sail loadings that are imposed on the stay, you really have a complex structure that really functions like an stayed antenna tower in an earthquake zone :^)
