Feisty Giant Petrels
In Response To: Wednesday is PHOTO DAY! ()

It's hard not to think of these as being vile nasty creatures. Our guide referred to them as vultures of the sea. We saw them near Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand last month. Magnificent flying machines these and the albatross we saw close up. The web reference has a six photo sequence of the giant petrel face-off. It was very physical but also seemed ritualized. They were both equipped with the tools to do major damage, but did not. I guess Darwin helped rid the species of the tendency to maim others in the same species. These birds are bigger than they look!
