I saw these moorings in Hamilton Marines catalog and found the idea intriguing. We have many lobsters on the bottom on the coast here. Some counts put them at 1 lobster per square yard! But they don't have the best housing and most just burrow in the mud.
Well here's one solution. Moorings with built in habitat chambers. A load of these was delivered on the public landing in my harbor yesterday. As a mooring over granite, they have some nice features. The best of which is the easy to replace rod in place of the normal staple through granite blocks. Replacing the staple requires removing the mooring to shore for low tide replacement. Other than that, time will tell how these work.
Back to the habitat for humanity idea. I like it! There's been a mostly quiet rift between fisherman and pleasure boaters since the beginning of getting on the water. But we share the water access, sometimes begrudgingly. That's important to me.
As I hear of water access becoming more expensive around the world, it's this common usage of working harbors that keep the water access open and reasonably affordable to the public here in Maine.
Here's an olive branch of sorts. Sailors providing habitat for more lobsters. Perhaps this is the beginning of a peaceful commentary on pot warp?
