For planning I always prefer to use Coastal Explorer on the netbook or laptop

The screen is far superior to the C-P, and so is the user interface. Makes it easy to find what you're looking for, and to set up routes using the point-click (and sometime drag) of a mouse and all the benefits of a full keyboard too, rather than the clunky and often frustrating interface of a C-P. Doesn't matter which brand of chart-plotter, they are great for real-time info at the helm but crappy for route planning.
