That on an inboard engine, you smelled the engine compartment after you fueled the engine. If you smelled gas...you didn't start the engine. I don't know what gasket they are talking about.

You shouldn't have had gas down there. I believe that something was leaking other than just "vapor". My "guess" would be the vent line that kept getting "burped" into the bilge.
