I suspect it was the filler fitting gasket
nozzle shutoff? clogged vent?
How about rotted fill hose?

I owned gas powered powerboats all my life, don't have a clue what "gasket" it could be.
I remember guys who would smell the exhaust fan "dorade" or vent -- if they didn't want to open-up the compartment...
This was SOP back in my Atomic 4 days.
Still is with my A4.
