check radar to be sure no one is around and set them off. I get my wife to set them off about once a year when we are at sea. She hates it. Be sure to hold the handheld flares overboard and downwind when lighting them.

Last year I set off some 20 Y.O. 25 MM rocket flares and 3 out of four worked.
