Deering Harbor story
In Response To: Greenport area ()

One time I anchored in Deering. At the time I didn't know there was a town dock where you could take the dinghy so I rowed over to the YC and left my dinghy there. Sometime later I went to get a small fuel container filled at the fuel dock 'downtown'. As one boat was being fueled up, the attendent asked me where my boat was. When I told him (including where the dinghy was) the man who was having his tank filled said:

"Well, I'm the COMMODORE of the Shelter Island Yacht Club and you SHOULDN'T have done that!"

I thought he was joking but when I went back to the dinghy dock at the YC he called out to me and waved (cheerfully) from the YC porch while sitting with a drink in one hand in what was obvioiusly the Commodore's Chair! I couldn't help but laugh.

Sometimes my mouth can get my into trouble....

In any event, I agree that Deering Harbor is a good option.
