I've always gone outside of the main Overfall Shoals...It's a few miles, but the consesquences of slamming the bottom there wouldn't be good in any kind of seaway (waves or swells).

We've "cut" along the edge of Overfall Shoals (on the ship's channel side) in decent weather. The sea state can be a bit rough out there in the wrong current.
