Western Mexican Anchorages

Dropped the hook in at least 50 different anchorages on the Baja Peninsula and another 15 on the Mexican mainland.

20+ years of anchoring in the Pacific NW pretty much prepared me for everything that we experienced in Mexico - except for:

- Two foot to four foot swell onshore no matter what the wind did

- Very gusty night time down slope winds coming out of all the canyons 5 to 30 knots in five seconds - then calm for a minute. Often the most serious problem presented by these winds was the heat and extreme dryness. Midnight 85 degrees and 40% humidity in the cabin - calm wind. 2 AM - 99 degrees in cabin with 6% humidity and 35 knot gusts. The anchorage was well protected from any wave action but it is hard to sleep in that heat and dryness!

- a foot of soft white sand over hard coral or rock on the bottom - a Bruce digs in and holds up to 25 knots when it digs in even further and then skips off the hard bottom and begins dragging

If you can anchor in the NW - you'll find Mexican anchorages to be easy and obvious
