...at least by heaving-to, for starters... Looking at that boat and video, I somehow get the feeling that's something they never even attempted to do, at any point during their ordeal...

They certainly could have minimized the risk of transfer by putting the inflatable that was stowed on the foredeck to use for that purpose... Bringing 2 boats of that size together in that sort of seaway, it's a miracle that no one was hurt jumping from one to the other...
