For those with wind vane experience, how usable are they as a backup rudder?

Remember the QUANTUM LEAP, whose crew was rescued by a cruise ship a couple of weeks ago...?
And, looks like we'll be seeing another cruise ship rescue on YouTube shortly...
There was a shot on TV the other night.
Here's a video from Canadian TV...
That near miss
Yeah it also shows the downside to wearing a PFD
Seems they sure could have made it a lot easier on themselves...
Here's a blog link to a Schumacker 50 that was out in the same storm enroute to Bermuda.
Good story.
Interesting story, but their autopilot mount really was suspect..
Did you see where the base screws pulled out?
Look at it another way... if the mount had been stronger...
Look at it another way... maybe nothing had to give
autopilots, then and now
The BOC and Vendee Globe taught us
The problem I ran into is that the designers are underestimating the loads...
I doubt the Raymarine mechanical drive...
Pressure relief valve -- on hydraulic steering
I meant to say automatic ones, that would relieve pressure before damage.
Still looks like a weird rig -- clearly one-off...
Keel?
I think, what you see is what you get...
So what now? will the original owner get his boat back?
Uninsured? -- not without spending some money!
I was thinking the owner would be billed for removing it from the beach.
The Owner is responsible for the cost of its removal -- if the State or Feds elect. (Plus if it damaged a reef, etc.)
So they could hve done nothing... just stayed aboard, and they would have arrived in HI.
Not like it hasn't happened before...
I can't help but wonder how long FIRST LIGHT was intact...
The FIRST LIGHT episode was pretty well documented by LATITUDE 38...

Backs up my feelings on "emergency" steering
Or it is there full time and vulnerable to what got the main rudder
Far out!
