A straight line doesn't work on most sterns.

() It doesn't work all that well(to my eye) as it can turn up on some sterns.
I used a CAD program to get mine right. The stern is convex in shape as well as eliptical at the top. Once I got it the way I wanted, scaled to size, it was emailed to the sign guy. He used the fonts I requested and it worked nicely. It was printed out to that shape.
Cutting the letters is a good solution to get it right too.
