I bought an ancient 16' Cheseapeake Bay Gilling Skiff when I was in 7th grade. She looked like she belonged in the Mystic Seaport
small boat exhibit but she was solid, seaworthy, forgiving, and we had a lot of adventures together. About a year after buying the
boat, the following happened.
As usual, I launched the dinghy and rowed out towards the mooring. WTH!!!!! WHERE'S THE BOAT???? I couldn't see her anywhere!
After I rode back ashore, my father called the USCG. Yes, they had the boat at their peir near Fort Trumbell. The story they gave
was that they found the boat adrift in the middle of the Thames and towed it back. I was VERY relieved to see her and to see that she
was completely undamaged!
We never found out exactly what happened but, upon recovering the mooring, thought that the most likely explanation was that a power
boat prop cut the mooring line. The alternative explanation was that someone maliciously cut the line - but that seemed improbable.
