Hey Dave,
Sure, there are a few trouble spots thru Georgia, but my impression (sorry, haven't done the full stretch inside Georgia since the summer before last) is that it's not as bad as some think... Worst spot will likely be the Little Mud River around MM 655, that's always been a bad spot... But, bottom line is, tugs/barges are still running through GA, in some spots they simply have to wait for the tide...
I just came through Hell Gate near Ossabaw Sound a few weeks ago at about half tide. That's always been an iffy spot, but I had no problem at all, plenty of water... I went outside at St. Catherine's Sound, so I know you'd have no problem making it that far. And, if you got a good day to jump outside, you could run down to St. Simons or St. Mary's, easily...
I'd suggest making a stop at Isle of Hope Marina, very nice place with knowledgeable people, they should be able to fill you in on current conditions on the ICW southbound...
There's lots of cool exploring to be done through Georgia... Don't miss Cumberland Island, it's a fantastic stop, one of my favorite places along the SE coast, everyone seems to enjoy stopping there, and you'd have it pretty much to yourselves this time of year...
St Augustine is a very nice destination, and of course you could always take the interesting side trip up the St. John's River... So, keep moving, is my suggestion...
best regards,
Jon
