wax
In Response To: so talk to me about wax. ()

I tried automotive wax in the past and was underwhelmed with the performance. In particular an old timer at our previous marina said that had "great results" using Nu-Finish. I picked up a bottle and found that it was OK to put on, difficult to remove, streaky and didn't last long. I also found that the color of an automotive wax will transfer to gelcoat. I tried Kit as well as a blue Simonize.........never again.

Tlked with a detailer, he said two step process. Used Meguire's color restore to take off stains, light oxidation, etc at the beginning of the season. Then put a topcoat of Starbrite marine polish with Teflon. That combo works the best on the hull for me. Last season I tried the Meguire's "Pure Wax" instead of the Starbrite and found that during season I had a bad case of black streaks down the sides.

As far as the rough areas? Not quite sure what that means. If there are areas where the gelcoat is not so smoothm, I would use a small palm buffer and some more aggressive compound. The foolow up with the finer color restore and finally the marine polish. If you are talking non-skid......waxing that would be a bad thing. There is a non-skid cleaner with teflon??
